Why have a classroom library?
...because Kids Love Books!
The classroom library is one of the most important features of a classroom.
When people walk into my room, one of the first things they will notice is my large classroom library. Dozens of brightly colored book boxes, organized by theme, author and level, fill my bookshelves and cubbies. The message I want to send is Reading is Important!
Having a large library with a variety of books to accommodate different interests, levels and languages is ideal, but it can take years to build. I started my library during my student teaching and every year I have added to it. I search garage sales, thrift stores and book clubs (Scholastic) for books that I think my students will enjoy. While shopping, I keep specific students in my mind, hoping to find books that will inspire even the most reluctant readers.
THE GOAL: Classroom libraries should be well-organized and easily accessible to all students. The students should take pride and ownership in keeping the classroom library organized.
THE PROBLEM: How to keep the library organized while at the same time letting young students have access to as many books as possible. (Years ago, my library was a disaster by the end of the day!!)
THE SOLUTION: I developed a label system that keeps the library organized, requires very little maintenance and is easy for even the youngest of students (and non-readers) to figure out!
